Parents Immigration Rights Guide
At Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), we prioritize the safety, privacy, and well-being of every student. We are committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of their background or immigration status, feel safe and supported in our schools.
School Safety and Student Rights
MSCS is dedicated to maintaining a secure learning environment where students can thrive. In accordance with federal and state laws, we uphold the constitutional rights of every student, including protections against unauthorized law enforcement activities. Law enforcement agencies, including those conducting immigration enforcement, must have legal authorization to access student records or speak with students on school property.
How MSCS Handles Immigration Enforcement
If immigration enforcement officials visit a school, they will be directed to the principal or administrator, where they will need to provide identification and legal documentation. Staff will not act on any request without first consulting MSCS’s legal department to ensure that the law is followed.
MSCS Commitment to Education for All Students
All children, regardless of immigration status, have the right to a public education, and MSCS is committed to fulfilling this responsibility.
