School Breakfast Program
The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a federally assisted meal initiative operated in public and nonprofit private schools, designed to ensure students begin their day nourished and ready to learn. Program meal-patterns require whole-grain rich foods, fruits or vegetables, and low-fat milk, and align with updated nutrition standards set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). At our district, Nutrition Services serves an average of 45,000 student breakfast meals daily. These meals are provided to students at no cost.
For more information, please view the USDA SBP Fact Sheet or visit the USDA Food & Nutrition Service website.
Breakfast in the Classroom
“Breakfast in the Classroom” is a model of the School Breakfast Program where meals are delivered directly to classrooms at the start of the day, helping increase participation and reduce stigma. Many districts find that although the program is available, less than half of eligible students participate—so this model aims to close that gap. Nutrition Services is expanding our universal free Breakfast in the Classroom model district-wide; currently 63 schools are participating. If your school would like to adopt this model, please contact the School Operations Managers for the next steps.

Grab 'n' Go Breakfast
The “Grab ‘N’ Go” breakfast option provides students with a convenient, packaged meal—such as a bagged or boxed breakfast—that they can pick up in the hallway or near an entrance and consume in class or on the go. This alternative supports middle and high schools where traditional cafeteria service may pose participation barriers. If a Grab ‘N’ Go program might work in your school, please coordinate with the School Operations Managers to evaluate feasibility and rollout.

National School Lunch
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally supported initiative that provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to students each school day. At our district, Nutrition Services serves an average of 70,000 free lunches daily across all schools. Because our funding is based on federal and state reimbursements tied to student eligibility, it’s critical that students can select and create reimbursable meals in the serving line area.
For more details, please see the USDA NSLP Fact Sheet on the USDA website.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
The Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides free fresh fruit and vegetable snacks to students participating in elementary schools during the school day, helping introduce new produce items and promote healthier eating habits. Our Nutrition Services team currently manages the program in 68 schools. If your school meets eligibility criteria and would like to join the FFVP, please contact Kim Stewart at 901-416-0063 or via email at STEWARTKJ@scsk12.org.

Summer Food Service Program
Summer break is a great time for fun, but it can also mean many kids in lower-income areas miss out on nutritious meals. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) helps ensure children continue to receive free, healthy, and balanced meals throughout the summer months when school breakfasts and lunches aren’t available.
In the summer of 2025, MSCS proudly served over 500,000 free meals at various community locations and schools, keeping kids nourished and energized for all their summer activities.

After School Supper Program
Sometimes, a snack isn’t enough to keep kids going from lunchtime all the way to the end of the day. That’s why the USDA’s Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) helps provide nutritious suppers for youth in eligible after-school care programs.
Our After School Fuel Supper program is a free at-risk supper program, serving about 6,500 suppers each day across 80 after-school programs. This ensures children have the energy they need to learn, play, and grow up in a safe and supportive environment.
