MSCS Board Governance Retreat Focuses on Preparations for the Upcoming School Year

Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins, along with the Memphis-Shelby County School Board, convened a two-day Board Governance Retreat on May 31 and June 1, 2024. This retreat was a pivotal moment for the new administration to align on goals and priorities, and proactively address challenges and seize opportunities to advance student achievement for the upcoming school year.

“Our collaborative efforts and forward-thinking discussions highlight our commitment to educational excellence and strategic planning,” said Superintendent Feagins. “As the new school year approaches, we are ready to drive progress and foster a supportive learning environment for all students.”

Day One Highlights

Day one focused on updates from Dr. Feagins’ 100-day plan. Additionally, Tomeka Hart Wigginton set the tone with her presentation on the importance of effective communication within the district.

Key discussions included:

  • Review of Policy Draft 0018: Board-Staff Communications: The Superintendent and Board reviewed and discussed revisions to the policy to ensure clear and effective communication channels between the board and district staff.
  • Superintendent’s Progress Report: Dr. Feagins detailed her accomplishments from the first 30 and 60 days of her 100-day plan and outlined her goals for the next 30 days. She also unveiled her new organizational chart, emphasizing a streamlined structure to enhance efficiency and support.
  • Addressing Staff Concerns: Acknowledging the concerns and feelings of district staff during reorganization efforts, Dr. Feagins committed to meeting personally with each group to address concerns and foster a supportive working environment.
  • Student Voice: White Station High School graduate Alanna Pinkney motivated and energized the board members with a presentation on the Portrait of an MSCS graduate.

Day Two Highlights

Day two expanded the discussions to cover broader strategic topics, including:

  • Board Priorities for the Year: The School Board outlined their strategic priorities, ensuring alignment with the Superintendent’s vision and the district’s long-term objectives.
  • System Data Review: An in-depth review of system-wide data in key academic areas—math, reading, and science—was conducted to identify trends, measure progress, and highlight areas needing targeted interventions.
  • Foundational Strategies: Discussions on foundational strategies essential for achieving the district’s educational goals.
  • Budget Proposal and Insights: Examination of the upcoming budget proposal to ensure optimal resource allocation.
  • Financial Stewardship Opportunities: Exploring ways to strengthen financial stewardship through transparent and effective management of district finances.

Performance Data Review:

An in-depth analysis of performance data in math, reading, and science guided discussions on creating solutions and overcoming obstacles to student success. The Board examined current performance metrics, identified gaps, and strategized interventions to enhance student outcomes.

Looking Ahead:

The outcomes of this retreat inspired robust next steps as the administration finalizes the 2024-25 district budget proposal, slated for Board approval later this month.
