Dual Enrollment

Two HS Students Working Together

What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual Enrollment is a program that offers high school students the opportunity to begin working toward a college degree by earning college credit and high school credit simultaneously. The Dual Enrollment program provides an academically rigorous program that accelerates learning in a collegiate environment. The college courses blend the curriculum as a coherent unit of college-level work infused into a single academic program that meets both high school and college requirements. These courses can substitute for high school courses. This program gives students a jumpstart on a college education and career.

What are the benefits to Dual Enrollment?

Dual Enrollment provides an opportunity for qualified high school students to enhance their education by enrolling early in college courses and allowing them to progress toward their next academic goal without waiting until high school graduation. Studies show that students who acquire college credits while still in high school are more likely to graduate and continue their formal education.

Additional Dual Enrollment Benefits:

  • Allows students to receive high school and college credit simultaneously.
  • Eliminates the duplication of courses taken in high school and college.
  • Shortens the time required to complete an undergraduate degree.
  • Permits students to accumulate credits before entering college to be able to graduate from college early or on time.
  • Provides students with a broader range of courses, allowing them to complete general education courses required at most colleges and will enable them to explore different fields before declaring a major.
  • Facilitates a seamless transition from high school to college.
  • Lowers the cost of post-secondary education, thus reducing the financial burden for families and students.

How is Statewide Dual Credit different from Dual Enrollment?

Statewide Dual Credit courses are college-level courses taught at the high-school level by trained high-school teachers. All students enrolled in a statewide dual credit course take the online challenge exam. Students which meet or exceed the exam ‘cut score’ receive college credit that can be applied to any Tennessee public postsecondary institution. These courses are governed by the TDOE.

Dual Enrollment courses are college courses taught at colleges by professors or at high schools by vetted adjunct high school teachers. Students who successfully pass the course receive high school and college credit, there is no determining challenge exam. DE college credits may be transferrable to other colleges. These courses are governed by the partnering postsecondary institutions.
