MSCS Hosts Its Inaugural Simulated Congressional Hearing

Memphis, TN – On May 20, Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) Social Studies Department hosted its inaugural Simulated Congressional Hearings, showcasing student knowledge and civic engagement across several schools.

The leadership team that made this event possible.

Participating schools were:

  • John P. Freeman Optional School
  • Barret’s Chapel K-8 School
  • Sherwood Middle School
  • Colonial Middle School
  • Sheffield High School
  • Woodstock Middle School

Students presented on topics covered in different units of their social studies curriculum, covering a range of issues from the U.S. Constitution to political parties. Following their presentation, students responded to follow-up questions posed from a panel of judges, simulating the experience of a real congressional hearing.

A student from Barret’s Chapel K-8 School said, “I wouldn’t favor a constitutional amendment that bans political parties because people have different beliefs.” This thoughtful response underscored the significance of diverse perspectives in a democratic society.

Raney, a student from Colonial Middle School, added, “I really enjoyed hearing the different opinions from different schools and comparing our learning. It helped me think more.”

Congratulations to Colonial teacher Jerita Powell and her students who won first place in the inaugural event.

Dr. Erin Luster, Executive Director of Student Experiences, praised the students’ efforts, saying, “It’s always encouraging to see our students involved in projects that allow them to display what they’ve learned in the classroom in a practical way.” Luster added, “I’m excited to do this again and I’m looking forward to what opportunities this brings – whether it’s inside or outside the classroom through extracurriculars.”

MSCS remains committed to cultivating a learning environment where students are empowered to think critically and express their ideas. The Simulated Congressional Hearings exemplify this mission by giving students a platform to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.
