Middle Schoolers Explore High School and Beyond at MSCS ‘Level Up’ Fair

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) eighth-grade students on Tuesday, Nov. 19, attended a high school fair hosted at the University of Memphis. The event, designed to introduce students to the many possibilities high school and beyond have to offer, was filled with enthusiasm and curiosity. The “Level Up” fair brought together local agencies, including the City of Memphis Youth Services, Fox 13 News, and First Horizon, giving middle schoolers a chance to explore their future academic and extracurricular options.

For many students, the fair was a first glimpse into what high school could look like, as they walked through the University Center, filled with information about early postsecondary opportunities. For instance, representatives from the Trezevant and Kingsbury Career and Technology Centers were present. Trezevant’s CTE programs had their future healthcare professionals talking about their day-to-day routine, while Kingsbury’s CTE program had student barbers offering free haircuts.

Several board members were present to support and encourage students, including Board Chair Joyce Dorse Coleman, Vice Chair Stephanie Love, and Michelle Robinson McKissack.

When asked why events such as these are important, Samara said, “It gives me an idea of which colleges I should apply to. … It also helps people see which high schools can help their future career.” Another student, Mateo, added, “We have to explore our options for education. My parents are my biggest inspiration and motivation because I want to be able to do these things for them so they can see that I can do it.”

Students left the fair feeling inspired and more informed about their upcoming high school years. Many said they were excited to return home and start thinking about what high school clubs or sports they might want to try. The high school fair not only gave them a sneak peek into the future but also reinforced the idea that the journey ahead is full of possibilities. It was a day of exploration, inspiration, and excitement for these young students as they look forward to the next chapter of their academic journey.
