At Kingsbury High School, one graduating senior demonstrates that true strength is often quiet, lived, felt, and profoundly impactful.

With deep roots in Memphis and Mexican heritage, Martin's journey to graduation showcases his courage, personal transformation, and the support of his community. For much of his early life, Martin did not speak. He learned to communicate using a combination of sign language, gestures, and assistive technology (AAC Device) . Despite having spent time in foster care before being adopted into a permanent home, he now stands proudly in a cap and gown, ready to celebrate all he has overcome and the future that awaits him.

“There were times when things were tough," Martin said. “But I have worked through those times, and I know the LORD has my back, my front, and both sides too.”

Martin is not only a soon-to-be graduate – he is also a published author. After his sophomore year, he released Meeting M.E., a powerful and personal story highlighting his journey and redefining what it means to live with a disability. Through this book, Martin offers encouragement and insight to others facing similar challenges, turning adversity into advocacy.

While his story is extraordinary, Martinis also an everyday light in the lives of his classmates. His educators note his warm humor, loyalty, and willingness to help others, especially regarding computers or sharing a laugh. “I am a good friend,” he says. Everyone who knows him agrees.

His impact has been influenced by important supporters in the school community. Mrs. Kathy Brooks was an early believer in his potential, and at Kingsbury, Coach Reid and Mrs. Rochelle Bailey helped him build confidence, embrace social connections, and find joy in the classroom.

Martin has also made his mark beyond school walls. He has participated in inclusive and empowering programs such as Special Olympics Sports Day, Memphis Joy Prom, Kids Bowl Free, and Night to Shine, always embracing the spirit of connection and celebration.

Martin has various options and dreams for what comes next. He was accepted into the University of Memphis’s CCTP program, a 10-month course designed to support continued learning and independence. First, though, he plans to attend Avon Lenox, where he will further develop the skills and confidence needed to take that next step.

“Success to me means being able to do something today that I couldn’t do yesterday,” Martin says, a definition that reflects his growth and persistence. When asked who inspired him most during high school, he said, “My mom. She knows me best, helps me the most, and loves me no matter what.”

His favorite high school memory is taking his senior photos and realizing that graduation is within reach. In three words, Martin describes his high school journey as Faith, Growth, and Friendship.

As Martin moves forward, he carries with him not only a diploma but also an important message: a disability is not a limitation; it is simply a different ability. With love, faith, and a strong support network, every student has the power to rise, inspire others, and leave a lasting legacy.

Martin is destined for greatness; we can't wait to see what he achieves next!
