District 4: The Impact of School Counselors

This week, Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is celebrating National School Counseling Week. While school counselors’ work may go unnoticed or unappreciated, MSCS is making an effort to highlight and recognize their achievements. We reached out to Kierra Savage, the 10th-grade school counselor at Southwind High School, to spotlight her hard work.

When asked what inspired her to pursue a career as a school counselor, Savage’s response was rooted in a deep belief in the value of every student. “I believe every student has value and a purpose, even if they do not see it yet,” she said. As a school counselor, she has the opportunity to walk alongside students, helping them navigate both the ups and downs of school and life in general. What excites her most is witnessing the growth and transformation of students throughout their high school journey and beyond.

During our conversation, it was important to discuss the “why” of highlighting school counselors. She said, “When students, staff, and all stakeholders understand the services and expertise we can provide, it promotes partnership and strengthens support for all students and the school community.”

To attest to the strength she provides for students, Savage fosters a safe environment for students who might feel hesitant to reach out for help. She tells students, “If you are not comfortable walking by yourself, try walking with a friend, leaving a note, sending an email, or letting another trusted adult know that you want help. Also know that students do not have to ‘have a problem’ or ‘be in trouble’ to see a counselor. We are here for you and care about your present and future.”

One thing that students might be surprised to learn about Savage is that she not only makes schedules, but she also uses creativity to reach out to her students even if that means using puppets or bubbles. If students are having anxiety, she uses bubbles to help with deep breathing techniques.

If she could offer a piece of advice to all students, she tells them “to surround yourself with people that uplift you and inspire you to think beyond your current circumstances. It is OK if you do not have it all figured out.”

School counselors have a profound impact on the lives of their students, and it’s crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the depth of their work. By offering guidance, support, and advocacy, they contribute to the holistic development of students, preparing them for success in school and life. As this counselor’s insights show, their job goes far beyond scheduling and academic planning – they are advocates and mentors for the next generation.

Thank you to all school counselors for your dedication and tireless efforts in shaping the future!
