District 3: E.E. Jeter Student Selected to All West Tennessee Honor Band

Since the 2015-2016 school year, E.E. Jeter has proudly sent its students to audition for the prestigious All West Tennessee Honor Band. A testament to the school’s consistent success there is a  dedicated wall adorned with plaques that showcases the names of students who have participated in the competition. Recently, another plaque was added, further highlighting the school’s growing achievement in the arts.

For Mary Armstrong, the band director at E.E. Jeter, success has become a familiar feeling. In recent years, her students have consistently earned spots in the All West Tennessee Honor Band. Ms. Armstrong said thousands of students compete each year for coveted spots in the honor band. Out of the five students from E.E. Jeter who participated this year, two students obtained remarkable positions. Kathryna W. was selected for the Blue Band (the top group) as the 27th Chair Clarinet, while John T. was named 5th Alternate for Percussion.

“I’m so proud of my students for participating in the All West competition,” Ms. Armstrong said. “The students who make it are among the top players in West Tennessee.”

In addition to her role at E.E. Jeter, Ms. Armstrong is an active member of the West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association. Students who achieve the highest scores in auditions qualify to compete in the All West Honor Band competition, which takes place annually in downtown Memphis.

The success of E.E. Jeter symbolizes the importance of the arts in education. Participation in music and other creative areas not only fosters individual talent, but also promotes discipline and teamwork. For many students, opportunities like the All West Tennessee Honor Band will develop skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom. The arts are an essential part of a well-rounded education that enriches students’ lives and prepares them for future success in all areas.
