Dexter K-8 School is celebrating its school counselors this week during National School Counseling Week (NSCW), which runs Monday, February 3 through Friday, February 7. Dexter’s School Counselor Appreciation Week honors the school’s counselors – Julia Cole, Shameka Hampton, Natasha Johnson, Donna Maclin-Gilliam and Aiesha St. Ann.
NSCW aims to focus public attention and raise awareness of the contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. This year’s theme, “Helping Students Thrive,” highlights the significant impact that school counselors have in aiding students during their schooling years, such has assisting with college and scholarship applications, and their careers.
At Dexter this week, counselors are being honored each day with a theme.
- For Motivational Monday, students were inspired to design a card or write a special note to show their appreciation to school counselors.
- On Tasty Treat Tuesday, students are invited to bring a sweet treat or snack to school counselors.
- For Wonderful Wednesday, each time a student sees a school counselor, they are asked to tell them something wonderful they love about them.
- For Thoughtful Thursday, students should think about all that school counselors do for the school.
- And, for Flower Friday, Dexter will shower its school counselors with a flower or bouquet to show appreciation.
According to the American School Counselor Association, school counseling is 100-plus years old. It evolved as it was shaped by various economic, social and educational forces guided by the work of many individuals – from a position, to a service, to a program.
