Berclair Elementary School is celebrating Literacy Week, “stories passed down – folktales, fairy tales and nursery rhymes.” As part of the celebration, the Scholastic Book Fair will take place all week, through Friday, Nov. 22.
Reading is one of the most crucial keys to a student’s academic success. Literacy Week was designed to expose students to an abundance of books, authors, and genres. According to the American College of Education, “literacy” encompasses the reading, writing and effective communication skills (speaking and listening) necessary for proficiency.
As part of Literacy Week, Berclair Elementary will have dress-up days all week.
- Monday, Nov. 18, was Author's Day, “like an author’s words on the page.” Students were encouraged to dress creatively in only black and white.
- Tuesday, Nov. 19, is Illustrator’s Day, “like the colorful illustrations in our favorite stories.” Scholars were to dress creatively – as colorful as can be.
- The Book Fair continues along with Family Literacy Night on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
- Thursday, Nov. 21, is Snuggle Up and Read Day. Students can wear pajamas, and listen as their teacher reads them a “bedtime story.”
- And Friday, Nov. 22, is Character Day, where scholars dress up as their favorite character from a folktale, fairy tale, or nursery rhyme.
Teaching literacy is very important and begins very early in life. Parents/guardians, daycare providers, preschool and early elementary teachers all play a vital role in supporting literacy development.
