The Newcomer International Center (NIC) is a school that offers an educational model that is specifically designed to help new international students acculturate while benefiting from instruction focused on English language development.
Created in 2017, the Newcomer International Center program is an excellent option for international students between the ages of 14 and 17 (students who are 18 years old can only be accepted if they have just turned 18 or will turn 18 in less than four months) and who have never been to school or have an interruption in their education. As such, the program has several teachers certified in ESL (English as a Second Language).
At Newcomer International Center, students can not only learn English while taking other regular classes, such as math, science, and social studies, for example, but they also have the opportunity to leave better prepared to later finish high school (middle school, high school) in the school that corresponds to them, depending on where they live. According to the school principal, Gabriela Toro, all NIC students enter in the ninth grade, study for two years — unless they are ready after the first year — and graduate with 14 credits.
Located in the Wooddale High School building, the Newcomer International Center’s address is 5151 Scottsdale Ave., Memphis, TN 38118. For more information about the Newcomer International Center, call (901) 416-6055.
