Cordova High’s Brian Sneed Awarded $50,000 for Teaching Excellence

Brian Sneed, an automotive teacher at Cordova High School since 2011, recently received national recognition for his dedication to his students and career. On Tuesday, October 15, Sneed was surprised with a $50,000 prize from Harbor Freight Tools for Schools, with $35,000 allocated for Cordova High’s automotive shop and $15,000 for Sneed personally.

Selected as one of 25 instructors from over 900 applicants nationwide, Sneed’s commitment to providing hands-on experience and mentorship in the automotive field was a key factor in his selection. Under his instruction, the auto shop services 150-200 cars annually for the local community at reduced rates, offering his students practical experience that directly translates to the workforce.

“Mr. Sneed is the best teacher I’ve ever had,” said one of his students, who already works as a tire technician. “He puts so much effort into us, passing on his knowledge and experience.”

In addition to managing the automotive program, Sneed mentors new teachers and collaborates with local dealerships and mechanics to create partnerships and job opportunities for his students. His efforts in fostering real-world skills have helped bridge the gap between education and employment, making him a standout among his peers.

Barton Thorne, principal of Cordova High, emphasized Sneed’s importance to the school: “The idea that everyone needs to study poetry or chemistry in college is unrealistic. What Mr. Sneed does is invaluable, providing essential skills and career pathways for his students.”

Despite facing challenges common to career and technical education (CTE), such as funding for equipment and tools, Sneed has invested his own money to keep the shop running. The prize from Harbor Freight will allow the school to upgrade its technology and tools to improve the learning environment for future automotive technicians.

After 35 years of service as an Army first sergeant and over a decade as an educator, Sneed continues to go above and beyond for his students, ensuring they have the skills and opportunities to succeed. This award serves as a testament to his dedication to his profession and the future of the automotive industry.
