Superintendent Launches "Ready Day One!" Virtual Sessions to Prepare Parents for School Year

To empower families for the upcoming academic year, Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins has kicked off  "Ready Day One!" virtual parent engagement sessions. The first session, held July 18, drew an engaged audience eager to gain insights for a successful school start.

Dr. Feagins delivered a thorough presentation, covering pivotal topics from streamlined registration processes to curriculum updates. Parents tuned in from across the community, seizing the opportunity to stay ahead and ensure a seamless transition into the new academic term.

Attendees had the chance to submit their questions with senior leaders and staff providing answers live. Here’s a recap of some frequently asked questions. 

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW!

Need to return a laptop or tablet? 

You can return your student’s device at the school from which the device was issued. 

Need to know your school’s zone or bus route? 

Visit scsk12.org/transportation or call 901-416-6077 for all transportation needs.  You can also view school bell times and the school bus code of conduct! 

Does your student still need immunizations?

Visit a personal physician or make an appointment at one of our three student health clinics operated by Christ Community Health Services. 

Call 901-842-2379 or text “SCS901” to 91999 for appointments M-F.

Do you need assistance resetting your Parent PowerSchool Portal Password?  

Just call 901-416-5300 option 3, and we will be happy to assist you!

Where do parents go for enrollment and registration assistance?
Support is available at the zoned school or approved transfer location.

Can newcomers and refugees enroll without documentation? 
Yes. They can enroll at the school.

What about displaced students & homeless families? 
Yes. They can enroll at the school. For additional supports, parents can contact the district’s Senior Manager of Homelessness Taylor Payne, [email protected]

Device Fines/Holds or General Questions 

Most device issues will be handled at the school level. However, if you have already paid your fine online and need to get the hold released from your student’s account, or you just have a general device questions call the number below.

Where do parents go for issues with school staff? 

Parents can still reach out to the parent center to report the incident. Parents can also contact Dr. Rod Richmond ([email protected]), Dr. Janice Tankson ([email protected]), and Dr. Angela Whitelaw ([email protected]).

Who helps now with bullying and 504 plans? 

The Department of Education Services, under Dr. Whitelaw, will now support bullying and 504 plans.

How do I withdraw my student if I’m moving to another city at the end of August? 

Contact your child’s school for withdrawal assistance.

Have schools been briefed on any new systems, laws and policies for the upcoming school year? 

School based staff receive monthly training on new policies and practices as it relates to enrollment and attendance. Reference documents are also provided to staff.

Was my student’s transfer approved?

Email [email protected] for the status of a General Choice transfer.

Are badges required for students? 

Yes, that is a new security effort this school year.

Are clear backpacks required? 

Not districtwide, it is at the discretion of the principal.
