TCAP Results are In, Now What? MSCS Navigates Next Steps With Families

In April, students across Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) completed the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) Achievement Test, a pivotal measure of student learning in Tennessee.

On May 20, the state released preliminary raw ELA test score data for third-grade students to aid school districts solely in identifying students who may need additional learning support to reach proficiency.

On May 21, families received direct notifications about whether their child was deemed "not proficient" in the ELA segment of the 2024 TCAP or did not receive a score. These families are given the opportunity for a retest, starting May 22 and running through May 24 at the child’s school. The state's retesting window extends until May 31. The outcomes from both the initial and retest TCAP exams will shape decisions on promotion status and additional support strategies, such as enrollment in the Summer Learning Academy and/or tutoring.

Keeping Families Informed

MSCS has been proactive in keeping families informed throughout the school year via various channels, including virtual meetings, newsletters, text messages, letters, website updates, and social media updates. This week, District officials engaged with 88.5FM, The Voice of MSCS, for a radio special titled "Results are In, Now What?” During this insightful session, leaders navigated families through the TCAP retesting timeline, state mandates, Summer Learning Academy details, and proactive steps families can take to bolster literacy skills.
