MSCS Schools Observe Tennessee College Application & Exploration Month

The month of September is not just the beginning of fall; it's also a time of great anticipation and excitement for Memphis students and educators. Tennessee College Application & Exploration Month empowers students across the state to envision their future through higher education. Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) is pleased to participate in this initiative, working diligently to ensure that every student, regardless of their grade level or socioeconomic status, has the opportunity to explore and apply for post-secondary opportunities.

In a bold move to boost college readiness, Memphis educators and leaders are partnering with area schools and organizations to help students "See the Future." This groundbreaking approach acknowledges that the college exploration journey doesn't begin during a student's senior year; it begins with early exposure. This initiative emphasizes the importance of planting the seeds of higher education from a young age.

To celebrate the spirit of college readiness and foster a sense of community among students and educators, MSCS will be hosting a district-wide College & Career Spirit Day on Friday, Sept. 22. All students are invited to wear their favorite college or college-sport apparel.

September 22 is also "Why Apply Day." Colleges across the country and in Tennessee are waiving their application fees for the entire day, removing a potential financial barrier for many students who aspire to continue their education beyond high school. This gesture further highlights the commitment of educational institutions to support students in their pursuit of higher education.

Statistics show that Memphis and Shelby County have a significant number of college-bound students who are eager to take the next step in their educational journey. According to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission's College-Going Rate Report for the Class of 2022, Shelby County saw a 3.1% increase in the college-going rate. The goal is to build excitement and knowledge around the college application process at all grade levels, ensuring that every graduating senior has the opportunity to apply to college, no matter their background or circumstances.

One key aspect of this initiative is the promotion of the Tennessee Promise program. This statewide program offers high school graduates the opportunity to attend community or technical colleges with tuition fully covered, making higher education more accessible and affordable for Tennessee students.

Whether students plan to enroll in a university, community college, or technical college, families are invited to utilize the information and resources highlighted during Tennessee College Application & Exploration Month. Listen to 88.5FM “The Voice of MSCS” on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 5 p.m. for an informative and encouraging conversation about college access, college readiness, and how to take the next steps.
