Due to hazardous road conditions that remain in many parts of the District, the decision has been made to close all SCS schools on Friday, January 19. All scheduled school activities are also canceled.
Despite the continuous efforts of our facilities and safety teams to salt and clear ice/snow throughout the week, we have about five schools in rural areas with heavy ice and approximately another 30 with blocked driveways, bus lanes, walkways and other access points. Additionally, the extreme cold has caused major issues with heating, plumbing and fire sprinkler systems at multiple schools. The last thing we want is for our school buses to experience any incidents that could put the safety of our students at risk.
Thankfully, our partners in Shelby County will be assisting us further during the day Friday and over the weekend, and with warmer temperatures in the next few days we are looking forward to welcoming students and staff back on Monday.
District offices will open at 10 a.m. Friday to allow non-school-based staff extra time to arrive to work safely in the morning.
