MEMPHIS, TN (MSCS) – Born and raised in Memphis, Holly C. is another example that things can be done and that success can be achieved if you set your mind to it. However, there are two more things that may have contributed to her achievements in high school: gratitude and perseverance.

From playing soccer at Cordova High School to serving as the Student Government Association’s Senior Class President as well as the organization’s Community Service Committee Chair, Holly not only has excelled academically and athletically, but she has also shown what a true leader should be, no matter what, as long as your commitment is unconditional.

In addition to helping other students connect with community service opportunities around town, Holly has been involved in other clubs like the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the National Honor Society (NHS). She also volunteers as an interpreter for Spanish-speaking families at Latino Memphis, a local organization that seeks to help the Hispanic community of Memphis and Shelby County when it comes to health, education, and justice.

“Holly is a change agent who not only is a leader for social organizations but a leader in the athletic realm as well,” said Christopher D. Burns, a Cordova High School teacher/Student Government Association’s advisor. “She is the ideal student in and outside of the classroom. She was the driving force behind our canned food drive; she actually set up the connection with the Mid-South Food Bank on her own.”

Holly said, “When I was growing up (in the East side of Memphis), I was seeing like a lot of homeless people and parents struggling to put food on the table, so now that I am at an area where I can do better for others, I want to help in making a difference and bring awareness to that.”

Holly is set to graduate with honors, despite having to overcome a series of obstacles, including a “hard childhood” when she was growing up.

“Being grateful that no matter what, I have always had access to a home, food, and education, encouraged me to work harder and use the life God has given me as motivation to strive for future success,” she said.

After graduation, Holly plans to study Pre-Law and Political Science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Then, she wants to go to a law school to become a defense attorney.

“I want to become a defense attorney because I know many people don’t have access to attorneys or can’t afford one. So, when I get to the point that I can do pro bono, I would like to help the community,” reaffirmed the student who also loves outdoor activities, golfing, and boxing. “Also, I  would like to highlight that no matter how hard life can get, no matter who you are, you can build your future success and break stereotypes; we all can be great successful people as long as we have the determination and dedication to make our future success happen.”

Holly’s story is a testament of dedication, determination, kindness, and resilience; she is an inspiration to others. Congratulations and good luck on your journey to success and continuous excellence!
