Mariyama exemplifies the virtues of empathy and thoughtfulness. As the Salutatorian of Oakhaven High School’s Class of 2025, she has overcome significant challenges to earn the prestigious distinction of ranking second in her class. Her mantra, a quote by Frank Ocean, speaks volumes about her character: “Work hard in silence; let success make the noise.”
Growing up in the Whitehaven community, Mariyama cherished the close-knit environment she helped cultivate. She recalls thinking the constant noise from nearby airplanes was normal – only later realizing that it was an atypical experience. Her childhood was filled with fond memories alongside her siblings, where she often played the role of “peacemaker” as the middle child.
Born to parents from Guinea, located on the west coast of Africa, Mariyama’s first language is Fulani. Navigating her identity as a hijabi African girl, she battled stereotypes and struggled with self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Despite these hurdles, she stayed committed to her education and emerged more resilient.

Mariyama’s high school journey was marked by meaningful extracurricular involvement. She participated in the National Honor Society and the Gardening Club, where she took part in beautification projects across the Oakhaven campus. To accumulate volunteer hours, she spent time at the Memphis Animal Shelter. It was a unique experience that, while she doesn't consider herself an “animal lover,” taught her invaluable lessons in compassion and service.
After graduation, Mariyama plans to attend the University of Memphis on a full-ride scholarship majoring in nursing. She also intends to earn her real estate license and hopes to transfer to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville later in her academic career. Her ultimate goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner or a Nurse Anesthetist, driven by her deep-seated passion for helping others. As a proud first-generation college student, she sees this journey as both a personal and family milestone.
Still, Mariyama is a multidimensional thinker. “I can't be everything,” she says with a smile, acknowledging her interest in interior design. Her favorite video game, The Sims, reflects her love for creativity and building. It is another avenue through which she explores her talents.
Public speaking is one of her few sources of anxiety. Preparing for her salutatorian speech makes her nervous, as she fears becoming emotional in front of her peers. But her academic record speaks volumes: a remarkable 4.6 GPA, membership in the ACT 25+ club, and over $5 million in scholarships and grants awarded.
Among her favorite subjects is biology, particularly genetics and DNA. Reflecting on her journey through Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), Mariyama credits one influential person – Ms. Jones, an administrator at Oakhaven High. Though not a teacher, Jones served as a vital mentor, encouraging Mariyama throughout AP Human Geography and dual enrollment courses such as Criminal Justice, helping her earn early college credits.
In the end prefers to let her accomplishments speak for themselves. “I let my success be the noise,” she says. This is a powerful affirmation from a young woman whose strength and drive are already creating a lasting impact.
