For Dr. Yolanda Roberson, the journey to becoming an Optional School Coordinator at John P. Freeman Optional School was inspired by years of diverse and impactful roles in education. With over 14 years of experience in the field, Dr. Roberson has worn many hats, including serving as a PLC Coach, member of the ILT team, department chair, and teacher mentor. Additionally, Dr. Roberson played a key role in the founding of a charter school. These experiences helped shape a profound understanding of both the challenges and rewards of supporting students and collaborating with educators across different contexts.
As an Optional School Coordinator, Dr. Roberson is able to combine these varied experiences, working toward a singular goal: to nurture well-rounded students who are not only academically successful but also socially, emotionally, and physically prepared to thrive in an increasingly global world. According to Dr. Roberson, this holistic approach to education is what makes the role so rewarding. The part she sees most fulfilling about her role is “foster[ing] academic, social, physical, and skills development in students, equipping them to become leaders, scholars, and innovators capable of thriving in a global environment.”
A significant part of Dr. Roberson’s work revolves around creating a supportive and positive learning environment for students. By organizing events that bring students and their families together, Dr. Roberson helps to build a strong sense of community. These efforts are designed not only to improve student performance but also to ensure that families feel connected to the educational process and are equipped with the resources necessary to support their children’s success.
One of Dr. Roberson’s key priorities is closing the achievement gap. They work tirelessly to provide students with the tools and resources they need to excel academically while also fostering the development of critical life skills. Through a combination of targeted academic support and extracurricular activities, Dr. Roberson aims to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or challenges they may face.
As an Optional School Coordinator, Dr. Roberson is driven by a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to student success. Their work continues to have a significant impact on the school community, where collaboration, high expectations, and support for every student are at the forefront of their efforts. Through their leadership, Dr. Roberson is ensuring that the optional program remains a place where students not only achieve academically but also grow into the well-rounded leaders and innovators of tomorrow.
