District 2: Jaguars Pride: Standing up for Justice and Equality

Memphis, TN The 5th grade Jaguars of Vollentine Elementary  had an unforgettable experience attending the Freedom Award Student Forum held at the FedEx Forum. The event, which celebrates civil rights and social justice, provided the young students with a powerful connection to history and an inspiring glimpse of how past movements continue to shape the present.

One of the highlights for the students was hearing stories that linked personal narratives to the larger context of the Civil Rights Movement. They were captivated by the speakers’ personal accounts, which made the history come alive for them in a meaningful way. Many of the students commented that hearing these stories first hand helped them better understand the struggle for equality and justice.

Another major highlight for the Jaguars was the opportunity to see filmmaker and activist Spike Lee in person. According to Mrs.Thompson, their fifth grade math and science teacher, seeing such a notable figure left a lasting impression on the students. “The students will remember this great experience well into their adulthood,” Mrs. Thompson shared.

The event provided a powerful educational experience that will stay with the students as they continue their academic journeys, serving as a reminder of the importance of standing up for justice and equality.
