District 4: From Criminal Justice to Education: Principal Erron Henderson Leads Belle Forest Community School with Heart and Vision

Principal Erron Henderson of Belle Forest Community School has always felt that leadership was a natural part of his life, a role he embraced from a young age. As the oldest of eight siblings—four boys and four girls—Henderson learned early on what it meant to be a guiding force for others. “I was always the person that everyone looked up to,” he recalls. This sense of responsibility shaped his outlook, preparing him for a future where he would lead, inspire, and motivate not just his family but also the students and staff he would later serve. Little did he know that his journey would lead him from criminal justice to the heart of education.

In college, Henderson majored in criminal justice with hopes of pursuing a career in law. However, a conversation with his coaches opened the door to a different path. They suggested that many athletes like himself, who might not make it to the NFL or NBA, could thrive in education as coaches or mentors. Initially unsure, Henderson followed this advice and took a job with the juvenile court system after graduation. While also serving in schools during the day, he unexpectedly discovered his true calling when a school principal noticed his natural rapport with students and families. The principal encouraged him to consider a career in education, recognizing Henderson’s talent for relationship-building and collaboration.

From that moment, Henderson’s journey in education began, spanning 27 years. His experience includes serving as a teacher, coach, and administrator—roles that have equipped him with a deep understanding of leadership and student development. His 15 years of coaching were particularly instrumental, teaching him the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and mentorship. “All of those things helped prepare me for the role I’m in now as a principal,” he reflects. Henderson’s progression through various leadership positions—from the classroom to the administrative side—has shaped his approach to leading Belle Forest with a blend of compassion, accountability, and dedication.

Henderson’s philosophy as a principal revolves around maintaining a growth mindset and fostering a positive, supportive environment for both staff and students. “I treat new people in my building like sponges,” he says, emphasizing the importance of absorbing knowledge and building relationships. He believes that past experiences shouldn’t dictate one’s future but rather serve as lessons to grow from. His leadership at Belle Forest Community School reflects this belief, as he continues to inspire his teachers and students to embrace learning, collaboration, and personal growth every day.
