Communications Officer Takes on Role as Substitute Teacher at Grandview Heights Middle School

In an unexpected twist, Antwone Johnson, the Strategic Communications Officer for Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), stepped into the classroom as a substitute teacher at Grandview Heights Middle School on Tuesday. With a commitment to supporting educators and students alike, Johnson traded his usual role in the communications office for a day in the seventh-grade math classroom.

The day began early, with Johnson arriving at the school armed not with a briefcase but with math textbooks, lesson plans, and a sense of enthusiasm. “I wanted to show our students that learning is a collaborative effort and that everyone, no matter their role, is here to support them,” he said.

Johnson’s day included not only teaching but also listening to students’ thoughts and ideas about their education. He used his background in communications to engage the students, incorporating relatable examples and interactive activities. “It was important for me to hear their perspectives,” he noted. “These students are our future, and understanding their experiences helps us communicate better and support their needs effectively.”

As the day came to a close, Johnson reflected on the experience. “Being in the classroom gave me a renewed appreciation for our teachers and the incredible work they do every day. It’s a challenging job, but it’s also one of the most rewarding.”

The unique initiative not only brightened the day for students at Grandview Heights but also strengthened the connection between the administration and the schools they serve. Johnson plans to continue engaging with schools in various capacities, ensuring that the voices of students and teachers are heard throughout the district.

As the bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, the seventh graders left the classroom with smiles and newfound confidence in their math skills—proof that sometimes, a little creativity and connection can go a long way in education.
