Superintendent Announces Assistant Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Marie N. Feagins has selected Dr. Janice Tankson, an exceptional academic leader, as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS).

"Dr. Tankson has a proven track record of strengthening outcomes for schools," said Dr. Feagins. "With her deep understanding of educational leadership across elementary, middle, and high schools, she is uniquely prepared to drive positive change in our district.”

In this role, Dr. Tankson will oversee the Office of Teaching and Learning, Special Programs- Family Engagement, Advanced Academics and Early Childhood. She will be pivotal in maximizing the academic performance of students, educational leaders, and the operational efficiency of campuses.

Throughout her 25-year career in education, Dr. Tankson has held various roles such as teacher, computer technology coordinator, summer director, assistant principal, principal, and instructional leadership director. Her collaborative efforts with teachers and principals have consistently aimed at implementing empirical strategies to boost student achievement and improve school effectiveness.

A native of Rolling Fork, MS, Dr. Tankson earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and General Sciences from Mississippi State University. She continued her education at the University of Memphis, where she received a Master of Science Degree in Administration and Supervision (K-12), and a Doctorate of Education in Leadership and Policy Studies with a concentration in Executive Leadership.

As a servant leader, Dr. Tankson emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collective effort in achieving success for students, teachers, and principals. Her motto is, “When we truly work together, anything is possible and attainable.”
