Winter weather continues to impact building, road, and water conditions. Read the full story below.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) will remain closed on Monday, Jan. 22, prioritizing the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families as the Mid-South continues to recover from the recent inclement weather.
“We want to ensure a safe environment,” said Interim Superintendent Toni Williams. “After careful consideration of building conditions, road safety, and area water availability, we believe Monday’s closure is the prudent course of action.”
This decision was made following consultations with Memphis Light, Gas & Water (MLGW) and the Shelby County Health Department, taking into account several critical factors.
Water Availability: A city-wide boil water advisory remains in effect. As of Sunday, about two dozen schools lack running water or face low pressure. To address this, the District is preparing water deliveries and adjusting meal plans to avoid the use of water sources if the advisory persists. We're also communicating with MLGW for an estimated time of repair to water lines.
Building Conditions: Ruptured MLGW water lines have impacted the heating systems at multiple schools that rely on HVAC boiler systems. Additionally, our facilities team is diligently checking all schools daily and addressing any issues promptly.
Road Safety: While ice is melting on some roads, freezing temperatures are expected to return Sunday night, potentially creating hazardous conditions for the Monday morning commute. Therefore, road safety remains a concern.
“Our plant and zone managers have braved this icy weather to assess roads, parking lots, and building conditions and remain vigilant,” said Chief of Business Operations Julius Muse. "Despite the obstacles and challenges, our team is continuously finding creative solutions for a safe return to school.”
We recognize that this closure disrupts routines and creates challenges for families. We are committed to making decisions based on the most up-to-date information and minimizing any disruption. Our support staff is working diligently to reschedule games and extracurricular activities. While schools are closed, families seeking activities for their children can access our enrichment packets at scsk12.org/commitment/resources.
We are grateful for the patience and understanding of our families during this challenging time. We also want to acknowledge the efforts of our staff who are working tirelessly to ensure our safe return to school and to connect families in need with resources and services from community partners. Central Office staff will continue to work remotely, and the District's helpline, 901-416-5300, remains available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. for any families seeking support.
