A- A A+

In order to build upon the learning opportunities that occur within a child’s school day, at home and community involvement is essential for student success and ensuring 3rd grade readiness for MSCS students. The purpose of the Community Resource Toolbox is to provide resources and ideas for community stakeholders to #Commit2Literacy and get involved with the 3rd Grade Commitment.

The resources contained in this toolbox will aim to provide guidance for community organizations in supporting the early language and literacy development of children in their care, and it will provide opportunities for volunteer/sponsorship engagement. The Community Resource Toolbox resources will be drawn from both internal and external sources and will evolve over time. We encourage you to check back regularly for updates.

Volunteer for Team Read

Team Read is a very simple easy way for volunteer tutors to teach second graders a set of words using flash cards and fun word games. The National Institute for Literacy said, “Having a bank of sight words releases a reader’s attention for comprehension and for figuring out more difficult and less frequent words.” Volunteers will be asked to serve a minimum of one hour a week for the entire school year.

#Commit2Literacy by becoming a 3rd Grade Commitment Sponsor

Memphis-Shelby County Schools is making a commitment to reading readiness and we want you to join us!

Studies have shown that by the time students reach the 3rd grade they should be reading to learn, not learning to read. MSCS is launching a new campaign to improve our students’ literacy skills and prepare them for the next steps in their educational journeys. Show your support by BECOMING A SPONSOR today! Becoming an official Sponsor of the 3rd Grade Commitment will allow Community Organizations to get involved with addressing some of the disadvantages and disparities around literacy in our district. For example, we know 61% of low-income households have no children’s books in their homes, and we want to address that. Check out our great sponsorship opportunities above or contact [email protected] to learn more.
