District 8: Kate Bond Middle Students Ignite Leadership at TASC State Convention

MEMPHIS, TN (MSCS) – Kate Bond Middle School represented Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) at the Tennessee Association of Student Councils (TASC) State Convention at Haywood High School. MSCS students and staff earned an impressive array of recognitions for their leadership, dedication, and excellence.

The KBMS Student Council spent the year preparing for this moment – crafting speeches, developing leadership skills, and learning how to represent their peers with confidence. Their hard work culminated in a prestigious 4-star council award and statewide recognition.

“Participation in this statewide event helps to create a new narrative for MSCS students,” said Jennifer Rader, KBMS Student Council sponsor. “This group is the change we want to see in others. They’re excited to lead, even through challenges.”

Students were also inspired by impactful keynote speakers, including Cordova High alum Fletcher Cleaves, who encouraged them to pursue their dreams without limitations.

For students like Mikayla P. and McKenzie B., the experience was transformative. “Getting to show my school’s pride helped us feel like our voices matter in Tennessee,” Mikayla shared. McKenzie added, “Student Council helped me step out of my shell and become more confident.”

Both encouraged future leaders to be bold and involved. “Stop being scared – attend as much as you can,” said Mikayla. “Believe in your ideas and take that first step,” McKenzie echoed.

Kate Bond Middle School continues to elevate student voices and build a strong culture of leadership – empowering students to dream big, lead with purpose, and create positive change across Memphis and beyond.
