Dozens of MSCS Students Get the Prom Dress of Their Dreams at No Cost

MEMPHIS, TN (MSCS) – A local organization has made it possible for dozens of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) students to get the prom dress of their dreams for free in an annual giveaway, “The Prom Closet Giveaway Experience.” The event, held by Couture Cares on Saturday, March 1, drew hundreds of people, including MSCS 88.5 FM personalities, Cathy and Kavaunjay, who captured the magic while helping and interviewing some of the lucky girls who said “Yes, to the Dress.”

Davina Jones, executive director of Couture Cares, said the “Prom Closet Giveaway Experience” is more than a one-day event; it is the beginning of a memorable moment for young girls who want to feel and look like a princess while celebrating their upcoming graduation from high school at prom.

“Every time we hold ‘Her Prom Closet Giveaway Experience,’ I feel an overwhelming sense of pure joy and fulfillment. Seeing the smiles on the girls’ faces and watching their confidence grow as they find the perfect dress is truly priceless,” Jones said. “This event is so important to me because prom is a special milestone, and every young girl deserves to feel beautiful and celebrated. By providing this experience, we not only relieve a financial burden but also empower these young ladies to embrace their worth and step into their futures with confidence,” she added.

Founded in 2014, Couture Cares hosts the “Prom Closet Giveaway Experience,” also known as “Her Prom Closet Dress Drive,” once a year, inviting students from MSCS high schools to take part.

“We strive to make this event as inclusive as possible, providing an opportunity for all students to find their perfect prom attire, regardless of their school,” said Jones. The nonprofit organization also seeks to empower the youth through events, education, mentoring, college readiness, and financial literacy programs. “Our goal is to create a supportive community where every young person, regardless of their background, has access to opportunities and resources needed for growth and success.”

At Couture Cares, the dresses are acquired through direct purchases, dress drives, boutiques, and private donors. The organization also makes sure that they have available all sizes, styles, and colors.

Thanks to the collaboration of other community partners, Couture Cares has given away around 4,000 dresses since its inception. This year, more than 200 high school juniors and seniors got a dress.

“Our mission is clear: we aim to develop, engage, and empower youth from low to moderate-income families, ensuring they have the tools and support to thrive and reach their potential. Through our inclusive programs and commitment to equity, we strive to break down barriers and create pathways for youth to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities,” Jones said.
