MEMPHIS, TN (MSCS) – Dr. Melissa Collins, a distinguished MSCS teacher who has over 25 years of experience as an educator, has been named the Magnet Schools of America’s Teacher of the Year for the southeastern region of the U.S. She is one of six teachers in the nation who earned this award this year for exemplifying excellence in magnet education, inspiring students, and fostering innovative learning environments in their schools.
“Being named a Magnet Teacher of the Year allows me to showcase our district’s dedication and commitment to our stakeholders. I am thankful for the chance to highlight our vision of excellence as we continue to dream big for our students,” said Dr. Collins. “I am honored to have the opportunity to represent the many exceptional teachers and students in our district. Throughout my teaching journey, I have learned that building strong relationships is essential for achieving success in and out of the classroom,” she added.
A second-grade teacher at John P. Freeman Optional School, Dr. Collins’ efforts in the field of education have borne fruits. “I have seen my legacy through students. They have entered careers such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, veterinarians, and aircraft controllers, to name a few. Those dreams for my students were rooted in love.”
In an interview with the MSCS’ Communications Department, Dr. Collins highlighted the importance of providing an excellent education to students, along with mentorship, orientation, and support. This is something that must come simultaneously from parents and teachers, she added.
“I have been fortunate to have mentors who guided me, shared best practices, and supported me throughout my career. For this reason, I encourage teachers to network at all levels to enhance their personal and professional experiences. Teachers always nurture your passion regarding your hopes and dreams,” said Dr. Collins. On the other hand, she continued, “parents play a crucial role in their children’s well-being. When parents invest in their children’s education, students can look forward to a bright future and have the potential to achieve anything they desire. A quality education is the key to tapping into their full potential.”
Dr. Collins will be honored during the Magnet Schools of America’s national conference, being held in Nashville in April.
Magnet Schools of America (MSA) believes that “great teachers inspire not only their students but their colleagues and others in the community as well.” The organization’s annual Magnet Teacher of the Year Award recognizes “an outstanding, dedicated full-time teacher who exemplifies excellence in academic achievement and executes innovative programs that promote equity and diversity for students in magnet schools.” The award honors a PreK through K-12 Magnet School Teacher who has demonstrated excellence in the teaching profession, community, and parental involvement.
Congratulations to Dr. Collins for her contribution to Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Her leadership empowers others with knowledge, wisdom, love, and commitment for a brighter future.
