This week, students at Lucy Elementary celebrated World Kindness Week!
Oftentimes, students may have disagreements among each other. Therefore, a positive reinforcement system can be implemented. Campaigns such as Lucy’s help students foster positive relationships, learning compassion and care. Activities like these teach children that kindness isn’t just about saying nice things – it is about taking actions and showing up for others when they need it most.
As part of World Kindness Week, students had to collect certain items. Especially winter items, with the cold weather approaching, Lucy Elementary School had the great idea to collect socks and gloves for those in need, as well as canned food products. The students also wrote kind notes to those in need on Friday, offering words of encouragement.
Without a sense of community, students can become disconnected; but, through these types of activities, Lucy Elementary School teaches students that small acts of kindness can have a big impact on the world around them. And, by practicing empathy, students not only made a tangible difference in their community, but also learned the value of helping those less fortunate.
In addition to these service projects, Mrs. Hilliard's fifth grade class took it a step further and combined World Kindness Week with Ruby Bridges' Walk to School Day. They completed a walk distributing kindness, such as hugs and special notes. By the end of the week, Lucy Elementary had fostered not only a feeling of camaraderie, but also a renewed commitment to making the world a kinder place one small gesture at a time.
