School Board Hosts Community Meetings to Raise Awareness & Gather Feedback: 2021-22 Budget Proposal, ESSER Funding, Third Grade Commitment

The Shelby County Board of Education will be hosting community meetings to discuss the proposed 2021-22 Budget, ESSER Funding (COVID-19 Relief), and the Third Grade Commitment plan. The community is encouraged to attend the meetings, in-person or virtually, to learn more about the District’s plans, ask questions and provide additional feedback.

2021-22 Budget Proposal:

The District’s proposed budget is designed to serve students, families and educators. Thanks to the community’s feedback given earlier this school year, the District has developed a 2021-22 budget proposal designed to improve academic achievement.

ESSER Funding (COVID-19 Relief):

SCS is eligible to receive Elementary and Secondary School Emergency (ESSER) Relief funds, of which a percentage will pass through to charter schools. During the community meeting, District staff will inform the community of how the funds can be utilized, under State guidance, and the District’s proposal for allocating those funds to support students and schools.

Third Grade Commitment:

The School Board voted on a revision to Policy 5013 Promotion and Retention aimed at ensuring SCS students have the necessary reading skills to be successful before they reach the third grade. Third grade has been identified as the year that students are no longer “learning to read” but they begin “reading to learn.” As the full implementation of the Third Grade Commitment plan approaches next school year, the School Board and Academic team continue to raise awareness to make sure families understand the policy and measures of success for students.
