October 09, 2017 2832 views

Shelby County Schools will host its fifth annual Suicide Prevention Rally on October 21, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at Hickory Ridge Middle School. The theme of this year’s program is Speak Up: Let’s Be Heard, and its goal is to help educate families about warning signs and resources available through the District and community.

Suicide is one of our nation’s leading causes of death for youth between 12-18 years old, and through initiatives such as the SCS Mental Health Center, the District is able to provide counseling services, crisis interventions and other support for students and their families. During the 2016-17 school year, the District’s mental health center provided support for nearly 1,300 students.

Multiple vendors will be on hand at the rally to provide helpful resources and confidential support. There will also be free food, entertainment and guest speakers that may be able to provide answers about suicide in a comfortable setting.

The fifth annual Suicide Prevention Rally is open to students, families and any community members who may need more information for themselves or their loved ones.

If you know someone who is exhibiting signs of suicidal thoughts, tell a responsible adult or call 1-800-SUICIDE. If someone needs immediate assistance, call 911.
