Why: Overton High School has partnered with Southern Word, a non‐profit organization consisting of presenters of spoken word education and youth development programs in the US, to hosts the Mid-South Poetry Grand Slam Semifinal on Thursday, March 27 at 4 p.m. High school teams from across the Mid-South in spoken word challenges for a berth to the state finals, April 25 - 26, in Nashville.

More than 200 young writers and 25 schools participated in last year’s events, and Southern Word is anticipating similar turnout this year. The slam events are one culmination of the work that Southern Word does every day, teaching youth written and oral communication skills in schools and in the community. Southern Word has worked with classrooms at Melrose, Kirby, and Overton High Schools leading up to the slam. While the events are competitions, the importance of camaraderie and personal growth are emphasized as the true value of the slam series.
