Memphis, Tenn. – Over 180 first, second and third grade Bruce students will be treated to “Lessons in a Lunchbox: Healthy Teeth Essentials & Facts About Snacks” on Friday, February 28, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. This national event is being brought to Bruce by a partnership between local dental schools and organizations that aim to help improve dental health for children in the Memphis area.            

During the presentation, students will be treated to fun and interactive lessons designed to teach them about dental health and healthy diets. The program also aims to increase interest in careers in the dental profession from a young age.

“In doing this, we can make an impact in [students’] future health and better the lives of these individuals,” said Timothy Hottel, dean of the College of Dentistry at University of Tennessee Health Science Center, one of the partners in this program.

Bruce Elementary principal Martha West and counselor Theresa Herrington are excited about the partnership.

“It is important to teach elementary students about the prevention of tooth decay,” said Herrington. “It is a privilege to present this program to our students.”

Each child will receive a lunch box that includes a color-coordinated carrot-shaped case with a rinse cup top that can store a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss.

About the Partnership

The Children’s Oral Health Institute developed the Lessons in a Lunch Box program to help prevent oral issues and empower children and their families with the proper knowledge about routine dental care, oral health maintenance, good dietary choices and more.
